Prepare For The Addition Of A Kitten To Your Home

Posted on

If your neighbor owns a cat that is going to have kittens in the next few weeks and you are thinking about accepting one of the kittens and giving it to your teenager as a gift, use the tips below to make sure that your child is willing to help care for the new addition to your family and to prepare the kitten for the arrival to your home:

Speak To Your Teenager And Provide A List Of Expectations

Sit down with your teenager and discuss the possibility of them receiving a pet in the future. Do not make any promises, but state that you would expect your child to help care for a pet if you chose to get them one. Let your teenager know about the neighbor's cat and the impending kittens and ask your child if they would be interested in owning one of the kittens.

Explain that a kitten will require care each day and that fresh food and water would need to be given to the animal and that the kitten would enjoy having someone play with them and would need a clean, comfortable area to sleep each night. If your child is receptive to the care level that a kitten would require, provide your teenager with a chance by deciding to adopt one of the kittens.

Purchase Bedding, A Litter Box, Food, And Other Odds And Ends

Stop by your neighbor's house to confirm that you will be giving one of the kittens a home. Ask your neighbor to contact you when the kittens are born and to make arrangements to have you view the kittens so that you can select one for your child. While waiting for the kittens to be born, prepare for the new pet by purchasing bedding, a litter box, litter, food, and cat toys.

Keep all of the items in your bedroom or in a closet so that your child is not aware that you have decided to bring one of the kittens home. Clear one corner of a room in your home to place the bedding and other items in after you bring the kitten home.

Take The Kitten To The Vet And Make Appointments For Routine Tests

When the kittens are old enough to be weaned from the mother cat, purchase a cat carrier and head to your neighbor's house to pick up the kitten that you have selected. Make an appointment with a veterinarian to have the kitten examined and make additional appointments for routine tests and to have the kitten spayed or neutered. The veterinarian will also be able to assist with flea and tick control, skin rashes, and common illnesses if any of these become an issue. After the appointment, bring the kitten home and surprise your child with their new pet.
